Learning is widely acknowledged as a key mechanism by which experiments impact system change in cities. However, there is a dearth of studies articulating what this learning might concretely entail, answering basic questions such as: Who learns? What? How? And with what effect? As a result, advice to policymakers rarely goes beyond encouraging formal monitoring and evaluation of experiments. But is this all? And are these the only, or even the most important channels by which learning through experiments, and its impacts happen? In this seminar, Luca Bertollini will share emerging insights around these questions, notably based on ongoing research on street experiments as enablers of urban mobility and public space transformations.

Luca Bertolini is a professor of urban planning at the University of Amsterdam. His research and teaching focus on the integration of transport and urban planning for humane, sustainable and just cities, concepts and practices to enable transformative urban and mobility change, and ways of enhancing collaboration across different academic disciplines and between academia and society. He currently leads the Experimenting with city streets to transform urban mobility (EX-TRA) project.
