Mass surveillance through datafication, or dataveillance, is a complex, ideological issue in AI-driven Smart City projects, fraught with contradictions and tensions. Whose data will be collected, who is put under dataveillance, who will own the data, who will be marginalized and who will benefit? These questions became contentious in 2017 in the development of the Sidewalk Labs Smart City proposal to develop a post-industrial area called Quayside Toronto.

Sandra Jeppesen is a Professor in Media, Film, and Communications at Lakehead University, Canada. As co-founder of Media Action Research Group (2013-2019) and Lakehead University Research Chair in Transformative Media and Social Movements (2016-18), her recent books include Transformative Media: Intersectional Technopolitics from Indymedia to #BlackLivesMatter (UBC Press, 2021) and The Capitol Riots: Digital Media, Disinformation, and Democracy Under Attack (Routledge, 2022).

The event is co-sponsored by the Urban Arena and the Pufendorf Advanced Study Group ’Seamless Life: The Imaginaries, Experiences and Peril of Data-Driven Life.
