Blue and Green Infrastructure
Contemporary cities are often defined by the concrete, metal, and glass of buildings and infrastructure networks. However, ecology play a central role in regulating urban metabolic processes and is critical to support the lives of urban residents. The design, development, and maintenance of blue and green infrastructures can enhance biodiversity while providing flood management, water and air purification, pollination, and many other ecosystem services.
This focus area engages with the ecological aspects of cities, ranging from how individuals experience an urban forest to the opportunities and challenges of creating policies to support the design and development of nature-based solutions. All of these activities attempt to maximise ecological functions while creating cities that are economically prosperous, socially vibrant, and aesthetically pleasing.
