Buildings and Public Space
The built environment of contemporary cities includes multiple building types as well as a wide range of public spaces such as streets, parks, squares, waterfronts, beaches, and so on. Urban designers and policymakers play a central role in the retrofit of the existing built environment while also designing and developing new sites, neighbourhoods, and districts that can support living, working, recreation, and commerce activities.
This focus area engages with the design, development, and maintenance of buildings and public spaces. It investigates the various ways that social equity, environmental protection, and economic development are integrated to achieve improved urban conditions. In the best of circumstances, these processes are inspired by a wide range of multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary perspectives to ensure that the needs of all stakeholders are considered.
